Marco BAGNOLI
La voce, 2009
steel stair with the names of 72 angels – 9.42 m
sound by Giuseppe Scali and reading by Avi Avital
Bagnoli also intervenes in the most sacred space of the synagogue, inserting a steel stair that rises diagonally from the remains of a column on the ground to the summit of one of the 4 original columns. Like the stair in Jacob's dream, and like the voice, Bagnoli's stair broadens as it rises upwards. Though constructed according to a central perspective, it is overturned: thus the vanishing point, inside the earth, does not coincide with the point of view, located at the top of the stair. It is possible to climb up and down Bagnoli's stair, with its 36 steps, also in perspective: whether they draw closer or move apart is determined by the distance from which they are observed. The stiles of the ladder are painted in the Hebrew language with the 72 names of the angels, 36 on the way up and 36 on the way down. The same names are repeated by a voice that issues from a red ceramic vase located at the centre of the box that once contained the Books.
