Processo di paragone 1, Amore e Psiche was devised in 1974 but produced for the first time at Ostia. As its title suggests, the work involves a comparison of two objects, two casts of ancient sculptures resting on solid travertine bases. Since one cast is located near the synagogue and the other near the Capitol, it is impossible to see them both at the same time and the comparison thus takes place in the memory. Given its selective nature in retaining certain details and overlooking others, memory will never allow us to solve the problem of whether the two casts are the same or just similar.
Processo di paragone reconfirms in a new form some of the linchpins of Mochetti’s work. Firstly, there is the idea of the work as a relationship rather than an object
Secondly, the mental rebound from one cast to the other eliminates the space dividing them. “Space exists as long as it is experienced. It must be invented if it is to exist. Neither time nor space exists without the other. I believe that cosmic space is infinite and that traveling it depends on our understanding. It is like a balloon that expands in step with our knowledge”, says Mochetti. There are two possibilities. Either space pre-exists and is occupied by the work or it is the work that creates space. Or annuls it, as in Ostia.
